summer crossing

Right, so I’m still confused about this one. I chose it because I loved Breakfast at Tiffany’s so very much and the back of this book claims that this is “the lost novel that inspired Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. Big words. I mean really that just means it was Truman Capote’s other, short, non-thriller novel. I think. This novel is about Grady, a wealthy young woman we’re supposed to believe is unique although I’m not too sure why, who falls in love with a Jewish parking attendant. The fact that he’s Jewish does absolutely nothing for the story except that he’s supposed to be marrying a girl called Rachel or Rebecca (can’t remember which) – like all Jewish men are. That’s not sarcastic, that’s actually quite accurate. Anyways so she wants to marry this poor man, but there’s not really any scandal about it. In fact I don’t really know what the plot is. Except she goes a little bit off her rocks at the end of the book. Maybe it was all the seawater that had made its way into my system as I read this on the beach, but I was completely underwhelmed by the ending. I think I didn’t understand it. I didn’t hate reading the book though. The conversations between the characters were interesting. Capote’s writing style is quite nice. I was rooting for the other guy. Peter – childhood friend, recently realised he was madly in love with her. The afterward was far more interesting. Turns out Capote was a bit of a gossip in his time. And he liked vodka with orange juice.
